What if we regenerated neighbourhoods around the amateur economy, enabling networks of passionate local traders, doers and makers to connect with each other? Because informal places that bring people together to tinker, like Australia’s ‘men’s sheds’, can support people out of loneliness and depression – and when projects and places enable people to connect with each other around the things they love, this can change communities. This could unlock a next generation of sheds, vegetable patches, furniture repair, amateur radio stations, community events and model workshops – creating valuable local sources of income, and boosting older people’s mental health.
Men’s Sheds (UK)
Men’s sheds movement promotes men’s health and wellbeing overall. There are over 400 Men’s Sheds open, and over 10,000 shedders/members – a place to pursue interests, skills and making.
